The Only Comparison You Need to Read!

A daring statement, I know, but I’m Mike the Web Hosting guy!

I’m going to save you a lot of time and money by telling you what I think about both companies, in this intensive and detailed comparison.

To leave no stone unturned, I will compare all of their plans and fundamental aspects like tech, speed, security and customer service.

I have to tell you from now that both companies are solid choices, because I’ve tested their services and they are much better than the majority of companies out there, which sadly, suck big time!

Anyway, let’s cut the fluff and let’s start with the fun!

Shared Hosting Versus: What Company is the Best Budget-friendly Option?

Shared Hosting Versus: What Company is the Best Budget-friendly Option? DreamHost vs Bluehost | The Hosting Institute

Shared hosting is perfect for those on a low budget, and if you are one of them, then this is for you!

However, from my own experience, I have to tell you that most shared hosting plans suck, they really suck, because they think that they can bring a bad service just because it is cheap… but DreamHost and Bluehost mark the difference here.

Both companies are solid in this department, but now it is time to compare their features.

Unlike Bluehost, DreamHost has only one plan in the shared hosting category, but it is more than enough.

In every case, be it with BH or DH, you will have to pay 36 months upfront if you want to get access to their promotional prices, but it is alright, because even then, they remain very affordable.

However, I have to highlight some serious advantage of DreamHost over Bluehost in this category:

  1. They offer you SSD storage. This is similar to the case with SiteGround, another excellent company against which I have compared Bluehost. In a nutshell, this technology will make your sites much better, much faster than HDD disks
  2. They offer you a free domain + free domain privacy + free SSL certificate. They are the complete package, and that’s excellent, because you get more value for your money
  3. A 100% uptime guarantee. DreamHost is one of the very few companies that offer such an outstanding guarantee, and if they fall to meet it, then they will compensate you.

Furthermore, I love how transparent they are, and this is a very important aspect, because it allows you to see how much value you are really getting with your purchase:

  1. Support for a large variety of programming languages: PHP 7.1, Python, Ruby on Rails, Perl, MySQL, Java JRE, JSON, golang, node.JS, sqlite3, etc.
  2. User-friendly control panel. This is huge, because this dashboard will allow you to control and manage everything easily and practically

However, there are some flaws I have to share with you as well, because not everything is so beautiful:

Now, I have to say it: when it comes to Bluehost versus DreamHost, in the shared hosting category, I have to pick DreamHost as the winner because:

  • The price is low, even with a 36-month upfront payment ($286.2)
  • You get more value for your purchase with many free add-ons, including the domain
  • You get more resources and better tech, which will inevitably derive in a better performance of your sites.

Now, I’m not forcing you to choose DH, but I’m sharing with you what I think and I’ve seen from my own experience.

Now that you know my verdict, it is time for you to take a decision!

However, in case you feel like shared hosting is not for you, because your project needs more resources and other features, then you are welcome to keep reading!

Cloud Hosting Versus: What Company Delivers the Best of Cloud Computing Power?

Cloud Hosting Versus: What Company Delivers the Best of Cloud Computing Power? DreamHost vs Bluehost | The Hosting Institute

This is the next step after shared hosting, because it brings you the power of computing power, more resources and excellent benefits:

  1. It is faster than traditional shared hosting
  2. Your data is better protected against attacks and online threats
  3. You can deliver content easily and faster.

That’s what cloud computing can offer you in a nutshell, and furthermore, you can use these plans for more things than hosting websites, because they are also great for applications.

Now, let’s compare their plans to find out which one is the best for you.

Now, you can see that the difference between prices is notorious, therefore, if your budget is very low, then the best choice for you is evident: Bluehost. And worry not, because you get good features to run your websites:

  1. A very fast response at 151 ms. This guarantees that your website will be faster than with shared hosting plans, for a better user experience for your visitors
  2. A nice dashboard for controlling your sites and usages. You can quickly overview the status of your site, how much resources you are using and more important information for your business
  3. You can upgrade to a better plan or add more RAM and CPU as you wish. Of course, this will come at an extra cost, but it is very easy to do!
  4. Data mirroring for protecting your data. This is a very nice features that adds an extra layer of protection to your sites.

That is why I like Bluehost and why I decided to include it here, especially for the lower-entry barrier regarding price.

However, this is because the cloud hosting plans by DreamHost aim principally to developers and customers who want to use them for applications.

Nonetheless, I don’t like that Bluehost doesn’t bring SSD disks with these plans, something that is a huge turn off, especially in such a competitive environment, with companies like DreamHost and SiteGround offering such feature in all of their plans.

So, my answer is simple: if you need more power, then look into the top tier plans of DreamHost, because you will get more resources, SSD storage and more RAM than with Bluehost’s plans.

Need more details? Then these are the reasons that support my claim:

  1. You get full root access and total control to install anything you want, run any kind of application and use any kind of software. This makes these plans very similar to what you get with a VPS, but for a lower price
  2. You can easily scale your server according to the growing needs of your business thanks to OpenStack-compatible API requests via command line tools. Without any doubts, this is something that more technical users will love
  3. You can use these plans for websites, apps, databases, tinkering and more
  4. They have the teach necessary for an outstanding performance, including SSD disks, powerful next generation processors and accelerated networks.

However, what kind of plans is better for each? Here you have my suggestions:

  1. For websites: the 2GB RAM is ideal, however, if you need more resources, then you can opt for the 8GB or 16GB
  2. For tinkering: the 512MB RAM is more than enough
  3. For apps and databases: the 8GB AND 16GB plans are ideal for you.

Another important note: you will have to pay as you go. These are the real prices of each plan:

  1. 512MB: $0.0075 per hour
  2. 2GB: $0.02 per hour
  3. 8GB: $0.08 per hour
  4. 16GB: $0.16 per hour.

Overall, now you know what I think about each company, so you can pick the plan that better suits your needs and objectives!

Now it is time to review their WordPress hosting plans, so you can pick the best option for your business.

They compete very closely in prices, so this is going to be a nice comparison in order to pick the best option for your business.

Now, for those looking for an affordable yet specialized option for their WordPress site: DreamHost’s Starter plan is excellent. For only $47.95, you get many excellent features:

  1. SSD disks for more speed and better general performance
  2. Free domain with annual plan
  3. Instant customer service
  4. Install WP with only 1 click
  5. Free SSL certificate with 1-click install.

Furthermore, the performance and speed of your site is going to be excellent. However, I recommend you to host only 1 site or 2 at max, because this way you will get much more from your resources than if you use it for several websites.

Now, let’s explore the key features of each company, so you can know what you are buying:

DreamHost: What Do They Bring to the Table?

One of the things that I like about this company the most is that they are very transparent about the features they offer. Here you have the most important ones:

  1. The custom control panel makes everything very easy to manage. If you want a platform that makes it easy to install WP and anything you need, then DreamHost has already taken care of it for you
  2. SSH access for the most advanced users. If you wish to make some precise adjustments or adapt the platform to your own needs, then DH can enable it for you
  3. Professional Web Application Firewall. With every plan you get a dual WAFs to fight against malicious HTTP traffic
  4. Domain privacy comes included. This is a major advantage, because most hosting or domains registers will charge an extra fee for it, whereas DH gives it to you for free
  5. Automatic WP updates + daily backups. Everything will update promptly, as soon as the updates are released. Furthermore, the company will also take care of the daily automatic backups to protect your data
  6. Total SFTP access. This the encrypted evolution of FTP, so you can transfer and upload files much safer and more safely
  7. High-end caching for more speed. You get server-level caching for making your websites considerably faster, and this is something that not all hosting companies offer. You will also get Object and Varnish caching
  8. Super-fast and scalable cloud architecture. Thanks to this the performance of your websites will be excellent and the provisioning will be super-quick
  9. It is very easy to upgrade. As your business grows you will need more resources and features, and I like that DreamHost has made it easy for you to upgrade to a better plan with only 1 click
  10. Brotli compression for a superior performance. The company has included this Google’s software to improve the delivery times of your site regardless of its site. You will see that your site will be much faster
  11. HTTP2 comes enabled by default. Your site will load faster and you will save resources, so DH has included it in your plan.

As you can see, DH’s plans come equipped with plenty of steel-solid features that have been engineered to improve the performance of your site.

I like how they have placed key features like server-level caching, HTTP2, SSD storage and Brotli compression for making your sites super-fast. In addition, the cloud architecture makes the delivery times surprisingly quick, so this will make the performance of your site even better.

However, it’d be excellent if they disclosed how much backup space they bring and the RAM that every plan comes with. They are very transparent, but disclosing these aspects to the public would make them an even more attractive option.

Now, let’s see what Bluehost has to offer you.

Bluehost: What Features Make It a Good Option?

  1. The plans run on a fast VPS platform. This will make the load times much faster, and therefore, make your visitors have a better experience on your site
  2. SiteLock WAF for security. You will be protected against malicious traffic and other threats that inhabit the internet
  3. Advanced NGINX architecture for a superior performance. I like it that Bluehost has created their own architecture for speeding up delivery times and bringing you a better experience
  4. Instant provisioning to get your site running ASAP. You will have your server up and running in just a few seconds, so you can begin your online venture
  5. Upgrade easily. You can add more RAM, SAN storage or CPU as you wish, because your business will grow, so BH has made it easy for you to upgrade
  6. MOJO marketplace integration. You can find and install anything you want, from plugins to scripts, with just a few clicks
  7. Guaranteed resources. The KVM hypervisor allows you to see that your resources are exclusively assigned to your sites
  8. Automatic backups. I like that they take care of it for you, and in addition, they include a specific web space for them.

Here you have what I like about BH:

Now, these features are excellent, but I feel like DreamHost has done a much better job at explaining what they offer than Bluehost.

Therefore, you only need to read and decide what plan and company offers you what you need.

My Verdict: What do you think Mike?

I like WP hosting plans, but there is something you need to know: they are mostly for beginners who want things as easy as possible.

If you don’t want to bother with anything too technical, then these plans are the perfect solution, because everything has already been configured for you to simply run your site with a few clicks.

On the other hand, if you want a very similar performance yet more freedom and to pay less, then I invite you to check the other hosting options, we even have a free one reviewed. A VPS hosting can be the perfect replacement, however, bear in mind that it is harder to administer.

However, there is a valid point here: DreamHost’s WP plans are also excellent for developers and designers. Only that they make things easier to manage and they give you access to their magnificent cloud infrastructure.

Furthermore, these WP hosting plans are the perfect starting point for many businesses, because you can easily upgrade when the time comes.

In conclusion, I like DreamHost’s plans the most, because they come equipped with excellent features that will have a direct impact in the performance of your website. Furthermore, their customer support is amazing.

Now, let’s compare their WooCommerce plans, another hot category.

WooCommerce Hosting Versus: What Company Offers the Best Plan for Your E-commerce Venture?

WooCommerce Hosting Versus What Company Offers the Best Plan for Your E-commerce Venture DreamHost vs Bluehost | The Hosting Institute

Launching an e-commerce store has never been easier since WooCommerce appeared.

There are many good reasons to use it for launching your store:

  1. You can use it for free
  2. You have a lot of space for customization
  3. It is very flexible
  4. It is simple to use, so it is perfect for beginners
  5. Built-in analytics system for tracking everything in your store, so you can know what’s working and what’s not
  6. It is very secure, so your store and investment will be protected
  7. Your store will look visually professional, something that can have a huge impact in your visitors.

As you can see, WooCommerce has a lot to offer. Now, let’s see what company offers the best plan for you:

Ok, now you have a good overview on what each company brings to the table.

If your budget is quite limited, then the answer is simple: go with Bluehost. If your store doesn’t require plenty of resources or the specialized features of DreamHost, then you will have no problem working with BH.

Again, what I like about DreamHost is that they bring plenty of value, and they are more open about it than Bluehost.

I think that BH could attract more clients if they explained clearly why their WooCommerce hosting plans are necessary for anyone interested in running an online shop.

If you check their page for WooCommerce hosting and their plans, you will notice that they don’t say much, while on the other hand, DreamHost does an amazing job at explaining you why these plans are different and how they can benefit you:

  • Server-level caching for making your website faster, and thereby make the user experience better, something that will have a direct impact in your conversion rate
  • SSD storage is the norm, and they let you know that they bring you a 200% better performance than traditional disks
  • WooCommerce comes pre-installed and pre-configured, plus you get automatic updates. Everything is already set up for you to customize and start selling
  • Web Application Firewall that is constantly updated to protect your store, because there are always new vulnerabilities and threats out there, but their WAF will keep them away from you.

They emphasize how easy, fast and safe their plans are, and therefore, why they are a good choice for WooCommerce, something that Bluehost does not clearly state.

Therefore, this is my verdict:

  1. If you have the budget for it, then I recommend you to choose DreamHost’s Plus plan, you will not regret it
  2. If your budget is not that permissive, then the Bluehost plans will suffice your needs, as long as the features of each plan are enough for your business
  3. Finally, if you can bear the technical complexity of a VPS or dedicated server, then I recommend you to check those options, because you will end up saving money (with a VPS) or take customization to the next level with a dedicated server.

Now, let’s compare their VPS hosting plans:

VPS Hosting Versus: What’s the Best Option in this Comparison?

A Virtual Private Server is an excellent choice for those who want to customize it to their own needs, way beyond the boundaries of most managed plans.

If you want to have more freedom and a better control on your resources, then a VPS might be the perfect choice for your business. Now, without wasting more time, let’s see what each company can offer you:

Now that you have a good overview on what each company offers, let’s do a quick recap to the most important features of each:

  1. Professional 24/7 support. Many companies claim this, but they fail to deliver, however, DreamHost has a dedicated team for helping you out whenever you need it
  2. SSD Storage. You will get a x20 times faster performance than with SATA disk drives
  3. Easily resell hosting to your clients. You can easily manage the accounts of your clients, billing and more. DreamHost has equipped your plan with all that’s needed to start reselling hosting in no time
  4. Simple and easy to use control panel. You can administer everything regarding your server with this useful custom-built panel
  5. Automatic software updates. This is self-explanatory
  6. Extensive compatibility. You can use Perl, Node.JS, PHP7, Python, Ruby and more
  7. Complete SSH access. If you know what you are doing, then you will love this feature. Furthermore, you can automate most of the thanks with Cron
  8. 100% uptime guarantee
  9. You can choose between Ngnix and Apache.

These features will make your VPS experience even better. Furthermore, I love how they include sub-accounts and reselling features, because many of the people who buy these plans are interested in selling hosting to their clients. If you are one of them, then things will be much easier for you with DreamHost.

Now, let’s see what Bluehost offers.

Once again, I have to favor DreamHost, because they offer a very similar value, but in this case, DH does it for a lower price. Furthermore, to get access to that price you only have to pay 1 year in advance, whereas with Bluehost, you have to pay 3 years upfront.

Even the monthly prices for DreamHost plans aren’t that high, in case you decide to pay month-by-month:

  1. Easy and powerful VPS platform. They use open-source tech like KVM and OpenStack, in order to make it both very powerful and simple to use
  2. Guaranteed resources thanks to the KVM hypervisor
  3. SSD storage for a better performance
  4. You can add additional storage whenever you need it
  5. You get full root access, so you can customize the server as much as you like
  6. Unrestricted SSH access
  7. Web manager for email, files, databases and more
  8. 24/7 professional support at your reach.

  1. Basic: $15/month
  2. Business: $30/month
  3. Professional: $60/month
  4. Enterprise: $120/month.

This is my verdict and I hope it helps you to take the right decision. Now, let’s check the last comparison: Dedicated hosting.

Dedicated Hosting Versus: What Company Has the Best Servers?

Dedicated Hosting Versus What Company Has the Best Servers DreamHost vs Bluehost | The Hosting Institute

If you want absolute control over your resources, more power, a better performance and practically endless customization options, then a dedicated server is perfect for you.

If your business is growing rapidly, so much that even a VPS is not enough, then it is time to look into dedicated hosting, because it will bring you everything you need to run your business without problems!

Unlike Bluehost, DreamHost doesn’t have defined plans, as you can customize them according to your needs.

However, before we advance in this analysis, you can easily see that BH offers the cheapest plans here, but if you are serious about your business, then the price shouldn’t be first priority. That is why I invite you to keep reading, so can compare and pick the best option for your business.

Now, it is time to analyze the features of each company, so you can know what they offer you:

  1. You can customize your package with a max of 64 GB RAM, 2TB of storage and up to 12 cores, whereas Bluehost limits you to 4 cores, 16 GB RAM and 1TB of web space
  2. RAID-1 storage for protecting your files and always delivering the content
  3. SSD technology for taking the speed and performance of your site to the next level
  4. Excellent protection against DDoS attacks
  5. Unrestricted root access and SSH. DH gives you as much freedom as you need to customize the server according to what you need
  6. 100% uptime guarantee. By far, the best guarantee any hosting company can bring
  7. Extensive support. You can use Perl, PHP (all the versions), Ruby, Python, Node,js and more. You won’t be restricted by absurd boundaries
  8. Contrab access
  9. 24/7 specialized support.

  1. Instant set-up. Thanks to their hyper-fast provisioning, your server will be ready to go instantly
  2. RAD-1 storage for delivering your content no matter what
  3. Full root access and SSH, so you can customize your server to the extent of what you need
  4. Unmanaged, in case you need more freedom and power
  5. Easy to use database manager for administering an unlimited number of databases, as many as you need
  6. OpenStack for superior speed and performance
  7. Add more storage as you need it
  8. 24/7 dedicated support.

Bluehost would get more love if they included SSD storage in these plans, because in XXI, it is unacceptable for a company not to offer that option. I hope they pay more attention to this, because it would bring them even more clients.

My verdict:

They compete very closely in this category, but the answer is simple:

  1. If you don’t need so many resources and power – like 12 cores and 64 GB RAM – then Bluehost’s plans are what you need, especially if you are on a tight budget. You get RAID 1 storage, plenty of bandwidth, professional customer support and total management of your resources
  2. However, if you are looking for serious power and a superior performance thanks to SSD storage and other powerful features like RAID 1 and outstanding RAM, then DreamHost’s top-tier plans are exactly what you need, because they offer you more resources than virtually any other serious company in the field.

This is what I think, and I hope that my opinion leads you to choose the right hosting plan for your business, because it is a vital aspect of it and thereby you need to choose carefully.

Conclusion and Final Words:

Unlike other reviews, I’ve not reviewed aspects like speed, security, ease of use, etc., because I believe that the comparison of plans already brings you a clear view of what to expect from each company.

Take your time to read each comparison carefully, and if even then you have doubts, feel free to contact me so I can help you further!
